Warren E. “Ned” Spieker, Jr., Chairman

Ned Spieker is Chairman of CLC and the Managing Partner of Spieker Realty Investments.  Until July 2001, Mr. Spieker was Chairman of the Board of Spieker Properties, Inc., a publicly traded (NYSE) real estate investment trust (REIT) with assets in excess of $7 billion.  Under his leadership, Spieker Properties became one of the largest REITs in the nation and the largest in the West, owning and operating over 40 million square feet of office and industrial space in California and the Pacific Northwest. 

Prior to the formation of Spieker Properties in 1993, Mr. Spieker was the Managing Partner of Spieker Partners, a private real estate investment and development firm based in Menlo Park, California.  From 1970 to 1987 he served as a Managing Partner and Board Member of Trammel Crow Company. 

Mr. Spieker received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.  He has since served as a trustee of the University of California Berkeley Foundation and on the Advisory Board of the Haas School of Business.


Richard D. “Rick” Aschenbrenner, Chief Executive Officer

Rick Aschenbrenner joined CLC as Executive Vice President in 1992 and has held the office of Chief Executive Officer since 1997.  As CEO, Mr. Aschenbrenner oversees the profitable development and operation of the company’s Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC).  Under his leadership the company’s portfolio of communities has grown to include nearly 2,000 residences completed or under construction, and represents development costs in excess of $500 million.

Before joining CLC, Mr. Aschenbrenner spent more than 20 years developing and operating a diverse portfolio of Southern California properties as an executive officer with companies including CalMat Properties, The Newhall Land and Farming Company, Kaufman and Broad, and M.J. Brock & Sons.

Mr. Aschenbrenner received a Masters degree in Business Administration from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts degree with Distinction in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley.


E. Justin “Justin” Wilson III, Chief Operating Officer

Justin Wilson joined CLC in 1989 as Executive Vice President and has served as Chief Operating Officer since 1997.  Mr. Wilson oversees the company’s staff of more than 500 employees and maintains occupancy rates near 100% at each of the company’s communities.  In addition to his operational responsibilities, Mr. Wilson oversees the design and execution of the company’s financing activities.  Mr. Wilson currently supervises the ongoing development of La Costa Glen Carlsbad, CLC's largest CCRC.

Mr. Wilson’s experience prior to joining CLC includes the development and financing of residential, commercial and office properties as General Partner of Urban Properties and as President and Owner of Urban Group, Inc.  He began his career with Union Bank, as Vice President and Manager of the South Bay/Long Beach/Orange County real estate loan center, the largest in the bank’s system.

Mr. Wilson received a Masters degree in Business Administration from San Jose State College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from University of the Pacific.  In addition, Mr. Wilson served as Captain in the United States Marine Corps.
